1. Did communism in Vietnam originate in China? How did it gain major influence in Vietnam while the other two Indochina countries, Laos and Cambodia, remained neutral (although there were minor forces of communism)?
2. Why is north Vietnam called Democratic Republic of Vietnam when it is of a communist government? I understand that some countries use the terms "People's Republic" or "Socialist Republic" as "Communist" does not sound as nice, but proclaiming one as "Democratic Republic" seems to state the exact opposite of communism.
3. Why did the United States let President Ngo Dinh Diem be executed? I read that although the CIA approved of such action, President Kennedy did not know of this until President Diem was executed and actually he did not approve of it. Yes, President Diem was said to be a corrupt president and incapable of handling situations in Vietnam. Is it why he was assassinated to CIA's approval? Did not this weaken South Vietnam's position as Diem was one anti-communist profile?
4. The Ho Chi Minh Trail ran through Cambodia and Laos. Does this mean North Vietnam guerillas received support from ro-communists in these two countries? However, both countries stated its neutrality. So, did their governments not know that their countries were being used to support North Vietnam? Or did they know, and could not do a thing about it or chose not to do a thing about it?
5. Did Vietnam War brought about westernization upon the country? Despite the destruction, did the US army and other countries' intervention brought about development or social/economical changes upon Vietnam?
6. Since 1967 onwards, did ASEAN intervene in the war in some way or another? Did it help any side of the war, or expressed its view of this war? If yes, how was ASEAN involved in the war? If no, why?
7. I read that South Koreans who were exposed to Agent Orange sued US companies asking for compensation for damages and succeeded. Why weren't there any Vietnamese who sued these companies and succeeded? We know that Agent Orange victims in Vietnamese are still present in a large number until today. What is lacking in order for them to win a lawsuit of this case?
8. How is it that Agent Orange can still affect Vietnamese nowadays? Did it cause damage in their genes? If so, does it mean that the effect is forever? If not, when will these effects end?
9. Did the result of Vietnam War affect any other war against communism in its neighbouring countries? (also, why did Vietnam later invade Cambodia and removed the Khmer Rouge from power, although it was also a communist power?)
** hope the questions are not too stupid to ask
** might add some questions later
