TRISHAW TOUR: President Nathan being greeted by residents during a 'cyclo' ride in Hoi An

Singapore happy to seek partnership in promoting tourism: President Nathan
By Roger Mitton
DANANG (VIETNAM) - PRESIDENT SR Nathan hopes that with more Singaporeans visiting Vietnam, the increased tourism will further enhance the already excellent bilateral ties between the two countries. Mr Nathan, who concluded his five-day state visit to Vietnam yesterday, said the country is in a good position to become a key destination for both leisure and business travellers.
He said: 'Singapore would be happy to explore how we can be partners in promoting tourism.' Vietnam is keen to put itself on the global tourism map and will be organising major events such as the Miss Universe pageant to be held in July at Diamond Bay, Nha Trang, a beach resort area south of Danang. Officials hope the event will attract around one billion television viewers.
Mr Nathan hopes good ties between the two nations will spur artistic and cultural cooperation. To this end, Singapore's National Heritage Board will organise a 'Vietnam Festival 2008' from next month to July to mark 35 years of bilateral relations.
Said Mr Nathan: 'The festival, which will feature the first- ever major exhibition of Vietnamese contemporary art in Singapore, will include 100 historically important works, from paintings to installation and performance art.'
He ended his state visit by touring the ancient port of Hoi An, 30km south of Danang. It was his first visit to central Vietnam and he extolled its unique historical sites and long pristine beaches, where many developers are vying for the best spots to build deluxe resorts.
Picturesque Hoi An was once an important entrepot. From the 16th century until recent times, merchants from Asia and Europe journeyed to the little port midway along Vietnam's coastline to trade all kinds of goods from spices to silk and gold.
Sited on the banks of the Thu Bon River, its narrow lanes are dotted with temples, shrines and Chinese-style tile-roofed wooden houses. It also has boutique hotels, trendy eateries and silk merchants.
During their tour of the town, made partly in trishaws, the President and Mrs Nathan were greeted enthusiastically by locals and foreigners alike, including several Singaporean tourists.
As well as viewing the famous wooden Japanese Bridge, Mr Nathan explored some ancient Chinese houses, including the Hokkien association pagoda that Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong had visited last December.
He wrote in its visitor's book: 'I am pleased to visit Hoi An ancient city where much history is preserved for future generations to appreciate.' Before leaving for home, he attended a lunch hosted by the chairman of the provincial authority, Mr Nguyen Duc Hai, and other local dignitaries.

Q2.
Yes, I think Vietnam is a attractive tourist destination, as people from all around the world might like to learn about other countries' culture, and Vietnam has what they want - a rich and fufilling culture.
People travel around in trishaws in places like central Vietnam, and you don't really see people using trishaw as a mean of transport nowadays in most countries in the world, as the other countries have access to efficient transport network. Vietnam also has ancient Chinese houses that is difficult to find nowadays, and as President Nathan said, "[the] history is preserved for future generations to appreciate."
Tourists can also go to Vietnam for leisure purposes, and also to relax and unwind. They can visit the long pristine beaches that is in central Vietnam, and Caucasians especially like to go to beaches to suntan and enjoy the sun. This is one major tourist attraction, beacause other than enjoying the sun and the beaches, tourists can also enjoy the beautiful scenery, and also relax and stay at the deluxe resorts that is about to be built.

Q1.
In this globalised world,a country cannot afford to stand alone. Thus countries need to have bilateral ties with each other to survive and also benefit.
For Singapore and Vietnam, both parties have benefited from the good bilateral ties. The most obvious one is the increase in tourism.Singapore's National Heritage Board will organise a 'Vietnam Festival 2008' from April to July. This will thus increase the amount of Singaporean tourist with high purchasing power which in turn spur Vietnam's economy.Singapore will also gain due to the large population in Vietnam.
Singapore and Vietnam economy will also benefit based on the core-periphery theory.Singapore is the core where Vietnam is the periphery.Singapore would be able to get raw material from Vietnam and refined it using our secondary industries. The spread effect will also spread to Vietnam and cause economy to prosper.

Q2 Do you think Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination?
Yes, I believe so. This is evidently supported by the fact that Vietnam is known for its tourism and many international investors have found interest in starting or venturing their businesses in that country.
Personally, I have been to Vietnam. I truly appreciated the trip very much. I was a little girl of only eleven years of age and was accompanied by my mother and my aunt. We were there for visitation and well as to tour the country. We were there to visit my aunt’s business partner who got along very well with us over the years. She was a joy through my childhood years as she gave us pleasant surprises by dropping by every Hari Raya Puasa and giving us presents. That was the best we could do to show our appreciation for that friendship we treasured.
In Vietnam, she brought us around to tour the country’s famous tourist spots. The one which I remember the most of its beautiful colours and attractiveness is one of the markets. It was not any simple ordinary market which we see in Singapore but one which was displayed many bright coloured stalls which sold a variety of products such as handbags, shoes, clothes and accessories, catering to both genders. Not only were they physically attractive, the prices of the items were inexpensive! The stall owners rendered good service to us as I observed my mother and aunt asking some questions. They showed a pretty pleasant disposition, with smiles which lighted up the surrounding atmosphere. We ate also some food, some which I disliked as a child. But of course there were Vietnam’s delicacies which I loved most. Vietnam’s coffee, to me has the best aroma and taste which I will not forget. I promised myself to drink a cup there if I ever have a chance to visit Vietnam again.
The roads are always interestingly jammed with motorcycles and trishaws. At that time, there were hardly any cars I can remember. Besides the heavy traffic, lodging was spectacularly comfortable. It costs us only US$25 for a room with queen size bed and an extra single sized bed!
Vietnam has truly been a remarkable and enjoyable experience for me. I had enjoyed my time there so much that I was reluctant to return back home. It would certainly be a dream come-true to visit that country again!

Q3. Suggest three reasons why Singaporeans would like to visit Vietnam.
Vietnam is no longer the 'less-developed' country, and instead, it is prospering and is doing well, especially in tourism.
As quoted, it is ready to put itself on the global tourism map and will be organising events like the Miss Universe Pageant. This shows that Vietnam now has the efficiency to organise and produce quality events. It is no longer the stereotyped as the country that cannot do well, and even if it does, it's going to take a long long time.
Secondly, Vietnam still preserves its rich and fufilling heritage, albeit its prosperity. This is something not many country can achieve. As the world becomes globalised, the population increases and the really old buildings and architectures are demolished. Thus memories are wiped out from the minds of people time goes by. For someone who truely enjoys History, Vietnam is the place for them to continue to embark on a learning journey.
And lastly, Vietnam does not appeal only to the History lovers, but also to people from all walks of life. Be it a student, traveller or even our President. It has pristine beaches for everyone to unwind and take a break. Since it's a beach, it will of course be opened to all, free! Who wouldnt want to enjoy life and party on the beach? I'm sure no one wants to stress themselves too much till every strand of their hair turns white. And probably in a year or two, facilities will be better than before, like the deluxe resorts.
Vietnam is no longer what it is 3decades ago and i look forward to experience all these first-hand.

Q3.
Investing in Vietnam could be one reason why Singaporeans would like to pay a visit to the country. Vietnam is the fastest growing country in Southeast Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28real%29_growth_rate). This might entice Singaporeans to make business trips to Vietnam to invest in the country, as development will increase their stocks value, earning them profit.
Singaporeans might want to come to Vietnam as it is a fast-growing country. When a country develops, it will need more and more experts and specialists to handle high-end technologies. These will provide jobs to Singaporeans with the skills needed there who cannot find a job here due to high competition.
Vietnam is also an attractive tourist spot for Singaporeans and citizens of other countries alike. Singaporeans might find Vietnamese culture different from them, with a history of being communist and the long war waged with USA. Instead of intimidating, the richness of Vietnamese culture in that they preserve their histories will become an attraction for tourists, including Singaporeans, as it promises a new experience for them.
Well done Amanda. I like your views and observation about Vietnam.
Chong Junn. Great observation and application of the Core-Periphery theory. However, I do not reallise see what kind of raw material appart form rice can we get from Vietnam. Maybe you would like to research on it?
As for Liping,I like what you wrote about your trip. I am impressed with the quality of your writing. Keep it up
As for Fiona, a well organised essay on why tourist woudl like to visit Vietnam. Great.
Vanessa. Good job in searching for additonal information on the internet.
Well done all. Do not restrict yourself to just the min requirement of just three post. Do more. This is what globalisation is all about. Teaching and learning need not be confined to the classroom

I think that singaporeans will visit Vietnam for their historical site, leisure and business. As there are alot of investment over there from what I had seen along the road of ha noi to halong bay I have noticed alot of investment make by country such as singapore over there.
Secondly, I had noticed that the historical site is all over Vietnam for example Halong Bay, awesome limestone karsts that have been there for a long years, Hue, Forbidden City that have been half destroyed yet they leave there for tourist, Danang the Hai Van pass and lastly Hoi An Tapestry Factory.
Thirdly, people from other countrys wanted to invest in vietnam because the country is booming attracting more and more tourist from all country to Vietnam for their leisure. There are also beaches in Halong Bay and hotels all located near halong bay.

Q2.Do you think Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination?
It all boils down to how a person defines the word 'attractive', it may be referring to how the locals treat an outsider, whether they are nice or cold towards him or her, or whether the scenery, atmosphere and serenity of the place attracts the person.
Although I have never been to Vietnam, i think that it is an attractive place to visit. This is due to the fact that I have heard nice things from those who have been there, saying that the locals were very nice towards them and that the agriculture there is vast and beautiful. For example, my aunt went there to aid a village in building up a school for the village young. She and her group were astounded by how the village community were very close-knit and helped each other in times of need which reminded them of how Singapore used to be that way when everybody still lived in 'kampongs'.
Now, due to globalisation, Vietnam is slowly turning into a modern country. With investors coming from all over the world to do business, Vietnam is definitely seizing this opportunity to progress.

Q3.
Three reasons why Singaporeans would like to visit Vietnam are probably because of its diverse landscapes and geographic structures, its unique traditions, and also its excellent bilateral ties with Singapore which might arouse the interests of Singaporeans to come to Vietnam.
Firstly, the beauty of the sceneries of the mountains, highland, hills and beaches in Vietnam might attract Singaporeans to enjoy the quiet of the nature and to relax. This is contradicting to the fact that life is much more hectic and busier in Singapore and thus Singaporeans could experience different aspects of life.
Secondly, the traditions of Vietnam which are unfamiliar to Singapore can be explored by visiting the country. Various ethnic groups, traditional cuisines and festivals as well as the history of Vietnam might also broaden Singaporeans' mindset so as to respect other cultures other than what they have already known in Singapore.
Lastly, regarding to the upcoming 'Vietnam Festival 2008' which marks 35 years of bilateral relations between Vietnam and Singapore, Singaporeans might want to know what has been done by Singapore in Vietnam and thus visiting the country is the choice. With around 1-hour flight from Singapore, this easy access to Vietnam could become the encouragement for Singaporeans to visit this "Pearl of Asia", too.

Q1
With good bilateral ties, both countries can help look out for
each other in times of crisis.
As now Vietnam's economic is improving,
given by its large amount of land and its primary and secondary
industries, like farming, fishing,Agriculture.
Hence, now it is progressing towards the tertiary industries.
With Vietnam's large land, Singapore will be able to set up industries in Vietnam, and have Vietnam to
manufacture the products, and sent it to Singapore for export.
In this way, it is cheaper in terms of transportation costs as
Singapore is not very far from Vietnam, and labor costs will
cheaper, at the same time, setting up industries in Vietnam,
it will also create job opportunities for the people in Vietnam and Singapore. plus, people of Vietnam and Singapore will get to know
each other while working together, exchange their cultural views,
and bond the people of 2 countries closer. IN conclusion, Singapore
will be able to expand and manufacture its products through the help of Vietnam, having its own original products instead of just a port, which imports stuffs from other countries and exports
stuffs from other countries to another country.
of course, Vietnam has benefits from good bilateral ties. As Singapore is famous for its beautiful infrastructure of buildings. Singapore
architects and engineers are able to go to Vietnam to build good
infrastructures in Vietnam, like apartments. As seen around Singapore, that many high -class apartments are built in Singapore, with units fetching prices of million, which shoes Singapore high standard of living that people
are able to afford these units in Singapore. Thus Vietnamese would
be able to have better quality of living by having good and beautiful
homes.Normally, not all Vietnamese can afford apartments in Vietnam as
its is to difficult to afford it through salary from primary and
secondary industries. with Singapore's help, with the new job
opportunities and the building of apartment, Vietnamese then would
be able to afford beautiful houses.
So its like both countries will benefit through the bilateral ties.

Firstly, Vietnamese believes in, 'The healthy leaf covers the torn'. The wars over the years did not destroy the people and instead, they have inculcated community feelings and the sense of mutual support among the people.
Secondly, the most admirable feature of the Vietnamese culture is that it was not assimilated by foreign cultures because of the strong local cultural foundations. I feel that this is definitely a learning point for Singaporeans in the era of globalization.
Lastly, Singaporean can explore unique historical sites and long pristine beaches, where many developers are vying for the best spots to build deluxe resorts. You can learn more about history of Vietnam and look at the beauty sceneries of mountains and beaches.
Dear MeiYen, I like your observation about the attractions in Vietnam. Good analysis.
Great observation Lugman. I love the way you analysis the concept of attractiveness. Not many students are able to see what you see.
Tania, I have always admire the way you can organise your thought.

Q3:
People may visit Vietnam for various reasons, like visiting the temples for religious purposes, for sightseeing or even to experience the Vietnamese culture.
Devotees could visit the temples to pray for their own health and safety, whereas tourists can go to the various temples along the Thu Bon River to learn more about the Vietnamese religion. About 85% of the Vietnamese are Buddhists, which would mean that Buddhist devotees from Singapore would go there to pray to the different gods in the temples. Also, the temples there are well-furnished with unique decorations,in which not many of the temples in Singapore have. This thus can make it a popular sightseeing spot in Vietnam.
Not only do the temples prove to be a great sightseeing place, other features like the Mekong delta, and some mountains and plateaus, or even the nature reserves would appeal to others. For those people who prefer to relax, deluxe resorts would be available soon, located near pristine beaches which make it a place with good scenery. Such sightseeing places are bound to attract people from all walks of life, and not only Singaporeans who want to escape their fast-paced lifestyle.
Vietnamese people have managed to retain many distinct native customs, some of which have been slightly influenced by the Western culture, but Chinese culture was the largest foreign influence. Ranging from Cuisine to Arts, these would attract people who are interested in the kind of life of Vietnamese.
Be it for any reason, people from other countries would largely benefit Vietnam's tourism industry, and bring about more development to the country in the course of globalisation.

Q3.Suggest three reasons why Singaporeans would like to visit Vietnam.
They are many reasons why Singaporeans would like to visit Vietnam. Singaporeans treat their trip to Vietnam either a vacation holiday,a field trip or for business purposes. The 1hour of flight to reach Vietnam gives Singaporean a better opportunity to visit there conveniently.
Vietnam used to be a less developed country in everyone's eyes. However, due to the process of development improving in Vietnam and globalisation, many people are attracted to Vietnam by the pictures shown on the internet.
Firstly, one of the reasons Singaporeans would like to visit Vietnam is of course, the scenery and the mouth-watering delicacies provided in Vietnam.Vietnam upholds a lot of natural unspoiled mountains and forests, long coastline, beautiful lakes, rivers, waterfalls and caves which are not found in Singapore. Not only that, this attractive and soothing scenery mesmerize one's heart and also help one to get away from the hustle and bustle life in the city. The recent research by a junior college shows that Singaporeans are willing to line up for their favourite food or to try new food regardless of the time spent for queuing up. Therefore, I am sure that Singaporeans will want to visit Vietnam to enjoy the food such as vietnamese shrimp cakes and beef noodles.
Secondly,Singaporeans would go to Vietnam to trade and look for further and better business opportunies as in Singapore, the society is very competitive and that the cost of living is rising. Moreover, the growth in Vietnam's international trade is equally impressive as Singapore's. Therefore, Singaporeans foresee that they could earn a better income in Vietnam than Singapore which make them want to go to Vietnam to seize for opportunites. Besides that, Singaporeans can visit Vietnam to learn more about their culture by the first hand information they obtained and could use in either business or to spread the information they have learnt to the others.
Thirdly, I have seen a newspaper article on the internet "Goodwill Tourist". I'm quite surprised and impressed about why they would like to visit Vietnam. Spending days labouring
at some remote village may seem far from the ideal vacation. However, some Singaporeans taking time off from work to
volunteer overseas. Some even quit well-paying,cushy jobs to do so.Instead of sightseeing, shopping and eating, they volunteer technical knowledge, soft skills and labour to contribute to making
life better, in areas as diverse as early childhood and maternal education, information
technology and language training, nutrition, public hygiene, community healthcare and
rehabilitation of disadvantaged children and the disabled. The Singapore International Foundation(SIF)which was established to enhance Singapore's globalisation
reported that there is a rise in volunteers ever since the tsunami.I am jubilant to see that Singaporeans not only did not take things for granted but are also willing to help the others when they are in need.

Q3.Suggest three reasons why Singaporean would like to visit Vietnam.
Its rich heritage and culture might be the main reason why Singaporeans are attracted to Vietnam. The culture of Vietnam is one of the oldest of such in the Southeast Region. Vietnam has customs and culture that is different from Singapore. A trip to Vietnam allows us to understand and experience the uniqueness of Vietnam's culture as learning need not be only confined to classrooms (:
Another reason why Singaporeans would be attracted to Vietnam is its cuisine. Vietnamese cuisine is extremely diverse which is similar to Singapore. It is mainly based on rice, soy sauce, and fish sauce. The huge variety of food in Vietnam definitely satisfies a Singaporean's appetite. Also, the Vietnamese Spring roll had gained its recognition after the Vietnam war. It was used during the war as a tool to transport messages as no one would suspect spring rolls. The spring rolls in Vietnam is also unique and different from Singapore's.
Singaporeans flock to Vietnam for leisure. It has pristine beaches (how cool can that get) and more deluxe resorts are being built. The facilities are better than those of 2 decades ago. Compared to spending a huge sum of money to fly to European countries, it is definitely a more feasible idea as air tickets to Vietnam are so much cheaper. For compulsive shoppers who are sick of Orchard Road, Vietnam also has boutique hotels, trendy eateries and silk merchants and the prices there are bound to be cheaper than Singapore's.

Q2.
Yes, I do think that Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination. Today, there are about 75 million people in Vietnam. Eighty percent of these are ethnic Vietnamese, while the remaining twenty percent comprises more than fifty separate ethnic groups. About seven million of these ethnic minorities are members of the hill tribes or montagnards (French for mountain people), making their homes and livelihoods in the spectacular mountains of the north and central highlands. Music, dance, and puppetry, including the uniquely Vietnamese water puppetry, are the mainstays of the country's culture. Among the many languages spoken in Vietnam are Vietnamese, Chinese, English, French, and Russian. This makes Vietnam the perfect destination for many who speak those languages.
Topographically, Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, primeval forests inhabited by exotic fauna, sinuous rivers, mysterious caves, otherworldly rock formations, and heavenly and for biologists and geographer. Also, the country has three unique areas: north, central, and south. The North is known for its alpine peaks, the Red River Delta, and historic Hanoi. The central Vietnam is known for the Hue, Vietnam’s former capital. The South is known for the fertile alluvial delta of the Mekong River, and the city that we will be visiting. The Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is Vietnam’s largest city.
Also, I totally agreed with Amanda Ong. Due to globalisation, “we don't really see people using trishaw as a mean of transport nowadays in most countries in the world, as these countries have access to efficient transport network”. Singapore also has trishaw around Bugis street and Chinatown. But how many Singaporeans had actually taken it before? Although much manpower is needed, but at least trishaw will not contribute to global warming. And as President Mr. Nathan has said, “ much history is preserved for future generations to appreciate”.
Besides Vietnam’s unique historical sites, beautiful sceneries, and culture, Vietnam’s cuisine is also being well like by many. The country's cuisine is anything but bland. Deeply influenced by the national cuisines of France, China, and Thailand, Vietnamese cooking is highly innovative and makes extensive use of fresh herbs, including lemon grass, basil, coriander, parsley, laksa leaf, lime, and chili. Rice is the foundation of the Vietnamese diet and soup is served at almost every meal, and snacks include spring rolls and rice pancakes. The national condiment is nuoc mam, a piquant fermented fish sauce served with every meal. Indigenous tropical fruits include bananas, pineapples, coconuts, lychees, melons, mandarin oranges, grapes, and exotic varieties like the three-seeded cherry and the green dragon fruit.
Many of us still imagine Vietnam through the lens of war. However, it is in reality a country filled with captivating natural beauty and tranquil village life. Its highlands and rainforest regions, far from being devastated, continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is very possibly the most delicious you will ever find. Over two decades have passed since Vietnam was officially united, and in that time it has done a remarkable job of healing its wounds. Today, this gracious and graceful country is an outstanding and attracting travel destination.

Q2. I think Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination. Vietnam is a place with historical, cultural and scenic sights which tourists will enjoy and understand more about Vietnam's culture. For example, Dien Bien Phu: A quiet valley in North West Vietnam. Here, reminiscent of the famous battlefield that witnessed the 57 day siege leading to France’s defeat still remains.
Vietnam has many different religions and ethnic minorities, even though Buddhism was and still is the most popular religion. There are many temples, pagodas and churches in Vietnam. Some nation-famous pagodas have sophisticated architecture and decorations and receive millions of visitors each year. These religious sites may interest the tourists and they can experience Vietnamese religious practices.
Vietnam has a diverse landscape and climate with beautiful scenery. Nature-lovers will want to go to Vietnam to admire the breathtaking scenery. Vietnam have various beautiful beaches such as Cat Ba, Nha Trang and Da Nang that are still mostly unspoilt and beautiful. The Mekong Delta has tropical rainforests and criss-crossing waterways. Tourists can relax themselves fully and forget their stressful lives back home.

Q3 Suggest three reasons why Singaporean would like to visit Vietnam.
Firstly,I think people would like to come to Vietnam, as many of the of the culture is still intact in Vietnam. Unlike places like Singapore, which is very modern with the TNCs.Even after the war with U.S.A, Many of its history and ancient building is still intact ,even after all these years. Not like Singapore with little ancient building, that is hundreds of years old.
Secondly, as singaporean are opportunist, we tend to seize the chance of building factories on Vietnam. To globalize Vietnam, as most of Vietnam can changed from forests to urban area to help both our economies. Making more Singaporean businessman, coming to Vietnam.
Last but not least ,is to me the change in environment. To see a less devloped country and how its people have adept after the war. As Vietnam is a very close to us and the war had finished not very long ago. I can see what the war has done to the people and country first hand. Which is better than seeing it on TV, as you only see one side of that story and not the other.Which to me is what seem to make me want to go to Vietnam. To see the other side of life in Vietnam, like the other side of a coin.

Firstly,i think the reason for singaporeans visiting vietnam is due to its developments.Quoting this ''Vietnam is keen to put itself on the global tourism map and will be organising major events such as the Miss Universe pageant''. This shows that vietnam is no longer the same old 'less developed country' , as this shows the improvement in its development. And singapore tourist would definitely want to see the improvements in the country.
Secondly, i believe that singapore tourists would like to go visit vietnam, is to know more about vietnamese culture. And by visting vietnam in person this would trully help them in unterstanding the vietnamese culture. This may also help in the ties between the 2 countries, and may also help create more opportunities for the people.
Thirdly, i believe that singapore tourist would like to vist vietnam is due to its beutiful attractions, such as the beaches, mountains & the cu chi tunnels which is known by many. This would help singaporeans know more about historical events, such as the vietnam war. This help in the understanding of their culture as well.
I believe that people from other countries would also like to visit vietnam, so as to create more job oppotunities, this will improve vietnam's tourism industry. Increasing vietnam's development.

Vietnam has somewhat achieved political stability even though it is a one party state. It means that Singaporeans can be assured of not being in a middle of a political conflict if they happen to be there. Singaporeans will know they will be safe and it is important to know that their travels will not be hindered by political unrest.
Secondly, Vietnam cuisine is one of its kind. Meats such as snake, soft turtle shell and even dog meat are considered to be cocktail delicacies. Certainly this is not for those with weak stomachs. However it will be a new experience since Singapore rarely has this kind of "delicacies".
Lastly, it is quite convenient to explore in Vietnam. Major cities are often well connected together and they are easily accessible. There are a lot of different modes like aeroplanes, railways, buses or by foot depending on personal perference.

Q2.
To be honest, if anyone were to mention ‘Vietnam’ to you, what will first appear in your mind?
Not very developed and war etc.
Oh yes, like most Singaporeans my age, I prefer sleeping, going for movie, and so on and forth.
I don’t watch Channel News Asia except when I’m on bus in the morning for the few minute which could barely keep me up with the world.
But most definitely I’m treating this trip seriously and as a way to open my shallow mind up to what is happening around us.
I have never been to Vietnam and have insufficient understanding towards it; hence, I did some quick research on Vietnam and its tourist attraction. From what I have seen so far, Vietnam is indeed a very stunning country. With beautiful sceneries and magnificent landmarks, it is bound to captivate any eyes that chance on it. Vietnam, like Singapore, is deeply influenced by its ex-colonial master and is a multicultural country. Therefore, it contributes to a wide variety of tourist attractions in Vietnam. So, overall, i think that Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination.
However, personally i also feel that Vietnam is not widely promoted for its tourism. Most people view Vietnam as a ‘disaster’, ‘third world country’, and ‘unsafe’ etc. it will attract tourist who are interested in its history and heritage sites. But who will know that Vietnam is actually a country filled with captivating natural beauty. How fine its beach is, and of course the mouth-watering cuisine they served. It needs to be promoted as a place of interest, purify the bad name it once had, only then will it really be a successful 'attractive tourist destination'.

question 2
I think that Vietnam is a attractive tourist destination because of its historical site such as the thousand years stone found in a cave in halong bay. Place whereby war has happened and for bidding for land for doing their business. As singapore is a small place there are not quite enough land to build alot shopping malls, hotels and even leaving those ancient Chinese houses, including the Hokkien association pagoda and even those war sites alone as a tourist destination. As vietnam alone the tourist destination is quite a number. Such as different places could have different things. The old building that have been there for quite a numberous years isn't took off its because their land is big and they wanted to make alot of attraction to the tourist to visit their country more than once again. As for places whereby war had happened i think that it is a good place for people who are interested in their history to go to as they are more than 10 historical places to visit throughout vietnam. As most people went their not only for leisure but for historical site its the top few country with quite a number of historical site to go to.As i have check the net i have found out that singapore had made quite alot of business our there such as hotel near the beach. Is not only singapore that has been there for business but japan and quite alot of country as they think that with the attraction that they have they might have claim good job opportunity to them and even earn quite a number of money through the tourist when they stay at the hotel.

Q3..Suggest three reasons why Singaporean would like to visit Vietnam.
> Singaporens would visit vietnam because,of the its unique historical sites and long pristine beaches, where many developers are vying for the best spots to build deluxe resorts.
> Secong reson is because the vietnam now, still presearves its rich heritage which is very difficult to do so now because of the population increase,Thus causing the old buildings to be Demolished and History destroyed, but people will still be able to learn through their journey to vietnam bacuse of the old bildings and history of them that are still intact/preserved.
> lastly, given that the vietnam community is able to preserve and continue to pass down history to the younger generations, they would definitely be able to advance to greater heights in 2 to 3 years time.
Hence i think that vietnam would be a place worth going.

Q2.
Yes, I think Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination because of the unique places they have.
They have places like 'temples, shrines and Chinese-style tile-roofed wooden houses'. Going to these places allows the tourist to know more about Vietnam's culture and attractions. Moreover, there are 'boutique hotels, trendy eateries and silk merchants'.
There are also 'unique historical sites and long pristine beaches' at Vietnam. The word 'unique' totally shows how much attractive Vietnam is.
Going to such places, allows the tourist to relax. Take beautiful pictures and let that moment be a memorable one.
Vietnam can also be an attractive tourist destination because of the fact that it can be the 'key destination for both leisure and business travellers.' So, they could enjoy themselves and get the job done at the same time.
Furthermore, the president Mr Nathan and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong enjoyed their trip to Vietnam. So, im positively sure that Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination.

2. Do you think Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination?
"It's comforting to know that amid all chaos there is always a sanctuary waiting for you somewhere" (extracted from Reader's Digest March 2007)
I think many of us have same sentiment that spending time in a peaceful environment shield us from the hectic lifestyle and fast-pacing world. In a way, Vietnam provides this 'sanctuary' for us.
From natural landscape to historical sites, cultural building to World Heritage, famous dishes to wildlife species,Vietnam provides abundant attractions for people who enjoy its serenity.
Needless to say, Vietnam's natural landscape has mesmerised countless people with its virgin beaches and islands, unspoilt mountains and forests, beautiful lakes, rivers, waterfall and unforgetable caves. These places have topped visitors travelling agenda by their unique features.
The Imperial City of Hue; Hoi, an ancient town trade center; and, My Son holy land have done Vietnam proud by attaining World Heritage Site cultural awards. The three 'recipants' are evidence of Vietnam's effort in preserving its local culture despite globalisaiton taken place today.
Above are few examples from website:http://www.vietnamstay.com/attraction/
Regardless of all the famous attraction found in Vietnam, what it really offers is a place to shield one from worries but not reality; noisy environment but not a place without people and it open hearts of those who harden theirs .
